Marriage in Islam: It’s More Than Love — It’s an Amanah

Marriage is not simply about finding someone you love. It is about building a relationship upon deen, mercy, responsibility and trust.

Benefits of learning Arabic for understanding the Quran

You chose each other. You said “Qubool.” The wedding day was beautiful.

  • But what happens when the excitement of the wedding is over?
  • When one of you is angry.
  • When money becomes tight.
  • When your spouse says something hurtful.
  • When both of you believe you are right.
  • When families become involved.

What does Islam actually teach us about marriage?

“And among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.”

Qur’an 30:21

Three words stand out: Tranquility. Affection. Mercy. These are not just beautiful words for a wedding speech. They are principles for married life.

When Love Isn’t Enough

Imagine this. Your husband comes home after a difficult day and is unusually quiet. Your wife has had a stressful day and doesn’t respond the way you expected. You misunderstand each other. One sentence leads to another. Suddenly, a small disagreement becomes a major argument.

At that moment, the question isn’t: “Who can win this argument?” The better question is: “How would Allah want me to behave right now?”

That is where Islamic character becomes more important than romantic feelings.

Could This Be You?

You’re newly married and your first serious argument happens. What would you do?

Control your anger and address the disagreement with fairness and good character. The goal is to solve the problem without attacking your spouse’s dignity.

Choose Deen and Character

Before marriage, attraction is natural. Compatibility matters. Financial stability matters. Family circumstances matter. But Islam also teaches us to look at something deeper: deen and character.

  • How do they behave when angry?
  • Do they keep promises?
  • How do they treat their parents?
  • Are they honest?
  • Do they respect boundaries?
  • How do they handle responsibility?
  • Do they fear Allah when nobody is watching?

Someone can impress you for a few months. Character reveals itself over time.

Marriage Is Not a Competition

One of the most damaging questions in a marriage is: “Who is doing more?” Instead, ask: “Am I fulfilling the rights and responsibilities Allah has placed upon me?”

Both husband and wife have rights. Both have responsibilities. Both are accountable to Allah. A healthy Islamic marriage isn’t built around constantly demanding rights while ignoring responsibilities. It is built around mutual responsibility and good treatment.

Kindness Inside the Home

It is easy to be polite to guests. The real test is how we behave with the people who live with us.

  • A kind word
  • A sincere apology
  • Helping when your spouse is tired
  • Listening without immediately becoming defensive
  • Showing appreciation
  • Avoiding humiliation

The Prophet ﷺ taught that the best believers demonstrate excellent character, including good treatment of their families. Your home should be one of the safest places for your spouse.

What Should You Do During an Argument?

Try this simple Islamic mindset:

StopDon’t immediately respond while overwhelmed by anger.
ThinkAsk: “Will my next sentence solve this problem?”
SpeakAddress the issue without attacking your spouse’s dignity.

Don’t bring up every mistake from the last five years. Don’t expose private matters unnecessarily. Don’t use divorce as a casual threat. Don’t turn a disagreement into humiliation. Solve the problem. Don’t destroy the person.

Let’s Talk About Money

Money can test even loving couples. Before marriage, discuss expectations. After marriage, maintain clarity.

  • Household expenses
  • Savings
  • Debts
  • Major purchases
  • Financial goals
  • Family responsibilities

Islam establishes financial responsibilities, while marriage also requires consultation, honesty and consideration. Financial secrecy can create resentment. Financial communication can create stability.

Protect What Happens Behind Closed Doors

Your spouse trusted you with their private life. That trust matters. Not every argument belongs in a WhatsApp group. Not every disagreement needs to be told to relatives. Not every private matter belongs on Instagram.

If a serious problem requires outside help, seek advice from trustworthy and qualified people. But unnecessary exposure can damage both dignity and trust.

Could This Be You?

You’re upset after an argument and feel tempted to share every detail with relatives or friends.

Protect your spouse’s privacy and dignity. If serious help is genuinely needed, seek advice from trustworthy and qualified people rather than exposing private matters unnecessarily.

Build a Marriage That Brings You Closer to Allah

A beautiful marriage isn’t simply: “We make each other happy.” It can be: “We help each other become better Muslims.”

  • Pray together when possible
  • Encourage good deeds
  • Learn Islam together
  • Make du‘ā for one another
  • Support each other during difficult times

Remember that your spouse is a companion in your journey toward Allah.

5 Questions Every Married Couple Should Ask Themselves

  1. Do I listen to understand, or only to reply?
  2. Do I appreciate my spouse, or only notice their mistakes?
  3. Do I protect their dignity when we’re angry?
  4. Do I fulfil my responsibilities before demanding my rights?
  5. Does our marriage bring us closer to Allah?

If some of your answers are uncomfortable, don’t panic. Self-awareness is the beginning of improvement.

The better approach is to control anger and address the disagreement with fairness and good character.

A Marriage Worth Building

The strongest marriages are not necessarily those without problems. They are marriages where two people keep returning to: Allah. Mercy. Patience. Responsibility. Good character.

Marriage is an amanah. Treat it like one.

May Allah place sakinah, mawaddah and rahmah in the homes of the believers. Ameen.
